Gerund could be a verb but also a subject, object or object of preposition.

• Subject at the beginning of the sentence 
• Dancing makes me happy 
• Object after to like, dislike, hate, enjoy, prefer, dislike, miss 
• I miss traveling with my boyfriend
• Object of preposition, after a preposition like: without, In spite of, in, up with, besides. 
• After attending class today we will rest
